What is Digital Marketing?
Digital marketing is the use of digital channels to promote your product or service to the target audience you want to reach. These channels are broken down to various platforms such as social media marketing, content marketing, mobile marketing, website marketing, email marketing, search engine marketing, and anything that involves a screen.
Is Digital Marketing a synonym for Online Marketing?
You would be surprised to know that digital and online marketing are two different methods of advertising your product or service but the latter is a subset of the other. Online marketing focuses on marketing your product with a platform that always stays online which happens to be limited exposure since website advertisement is the only option. However, digital marketing can exist offline and online through any electronic device or platform.
Types of Digital Marketing Channels
As explained above, digital marketing happens to have a lot more options on where you can advertise your product or service whether it be online or offline. Business owners have the choice on where they would like to advertise their product or service and if they have the capital to do so, they can use every digital channel known to man which I believe is a large change from how businesses used to run in the former times.
Described below are five types of digital channels that businesses have the opportunity of choosing to advertise their product or service.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
The description is in the title of this Digital channel. Have you ever wondered why the website of the first link of your google search happens to be the chosen one?
It is simply because that website is ranked higher than the rest and has the most interest from consumers that made a similar google search.
In order to make it that far up and gain website traffic you have to be consistent and updated. A few ways to see changes is by using alt tags, updating your content regularly or even the smallest factor like having a link-worthy site.
We have all received an email from a random firm trying to sell their product or convince you to invest in the services they provide, but email marketing can be tricky and ruined by the tiniest detail that may make it seem like you are being spammed. Although, it happens to be the most effective digital channel out there because no matter how you market your product, there is always an email at the corner of the screen where every interested client will end up for more information.
Email Marketing
Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising
The expense is in the name, a business that uses PPS legitimately pays for every click, even the ones that happen to be an accidental click from random users. Which is why it is important to ensure that your Pay-Per-Click ads have the right words and keep up with the targeted algorithm.
Although, it is a fast and effective way to target viable prospects.
A PPC Ad will usually pop up if you have a target age, location, gender or interest. The most popular places you see these Ads would be Facebook and Google.
This type of Digital channel is an ancient marketing trick where dealers that sell their product online can pay a commission to influencers that will promote their product. One thing that is not as known is that this tactic can happen through selling products to websites that will resell as well. An example of this type of marketing would be eBay and the ‘Glory Cycles’ site.
Affiliate Marketing
When it comes to content, there is a wide concept of creating and sharing online material that catches the eye of a consumer. Content marketing revolves around posting videos, social media posts and what you are reading right now, blogs. This method of digital marketing channel pushes interest towards the product or service being advertised.
Content Marketing
What skills are needed to become a Digital Marketer?
Along with data analytics and social media expertise, digital marketers need to have good writing abilities in order to convince the audience you want to attract that this product or service is meant for them.
In terms of academic level, a bachelor’s in the business field or closely linked sector like communications would be acceptable.
Bottom line
It is the twenty first century and there are a billion ways I could think of marketing a product or service. However, the digital world happens to be quite popular to sell out your greatest invention, idea or even self.
Nowadays, it is not about how you market your product or what your product is, it is about how consistent and patient you are going to be with your product on the market because like the world is always turning so is the internet.
